Cannon-Brookes’ entity Boundless Earth is at some risk of disqualifying itself from charity status over its political donations.

Boundless appeal: Mike Cannon-Brookes.The donations are only public knowledge because Dempsey had to update his register of interests with Bundaberg Regional Council with any gifts valued over $500.

However, a grey area exists where a charity can make political donations without those donations, or their support for political candidates, being considered the purpose of that charity. Furthermore, “In determining whether a charity has a disqualifying political purpose, the ACNC will consider all the relevant circumstances of the charity, including its governing rules and its activities. Assessment of these matters will be a question of fact and degree.”If Boundless spends $10 million annually on environmental projects and $100,000 triennially on political donations, it may well be on safe ground.

Expert’s warning on ‘nation-building’ superRetirement income review head Mike Callaghan says super funds must focus on delivering financial returns for members and not stray into risky nation-building projects. The AFR has been beating the same tired drum about industry super funds for decades, all while ignoring the facts that industry funds are required to put members first, consistently deliver far higher returns for members than retail funds, & are some of most trusted orgs in Oz. The whole super industry is too busy ticket clipping to worry about returns. It should be legislated that the compulsory super component cannot be used for high risk projects
