Aboriginal recordings that are more than 100 years old have been added to a national sound registry, signifying cultural and historical importance to Australia.

WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that the following content may contain images and of deceased persons.

The pair traversed the continent from Oodnadatta to Powell Creek and then eastwards to Borroloola on the Gulf of Carpentaria, publishing their experiences as The Northern Tribes of Central Australia in 1904.On the way they recorded many wax cylinders, working with the Arrernte, Anmatyerr, Kaytetye, Warumungu, Luritja and Arabana peoples.

The pioneering use of wax cylinders in the pair’s expedition captured the distribution of song and dance traditions across the Australian inland."It holds really important information about place names, species, and environmental knowledge really valuable to Arrernte people today,” he said. Mr Spencer’s introduction notes that this corroboree had first been described in north-central Queensland and was subsequently performed by Arrernte people at Alice Springs.Harmony duo Olive and Eva's 1955 song Rhythm of Corroboree also made the list.

Sydney council to cancel Australia Day celebrations | Sky News AustraliaA Sydney council has announced plans to cancel Australia Day celebrations on January 26 in favour of an Aboriginal festival called Yabun. \n\nCouncillor Darcy Byrne told Sky News the date of Australia Day was unlikely to change so “the way we mark the date does need to change”. \n\n“Given January 26 does mark, for Aboriginal people, the beginning of colonisation, dispossession and the removal of children, the deliberate destruction of language and culture, there is a better and more mature way to commemorate the day that includes them,” he said. \n\nThe Inner West Council – which Councillor Byrne described as “the birthplace of multiculturalism”- will vote on the changes next week and with the backing of Labor and Greens councillors, it is expected to pass. \n I've heard of Yacant but never Yabun. fuk yeh Don’t the aboriginals live in Australia too?
