The Inner West Council in Sydney will vote on a proposal next week to scrap Australia Day celebrations on January 26.
"For Aboriginal people January 26 marks the beginning of colonisation, dispossession, the removal of children and deliberate destruction of language and culture," Mr Byrne said. "Peter Dutton in all his mean-spiritedness has already made it clear that he will remove the right of Council to conduct citizenship ceremonies at all if they are cancelled on January 26.
Independent councillor Victor Macri said he won't be supporting the motion when it presented for a vote.
Council is not a 3rd tier of government they are operating illegally
Jan 26th is NSW's foundation day. There was no such thing as Australia in 1788. Just a British colony in New Holland flying the 🇬🇧. Australia Day should really be Jan 1st - but that sucks. FFS - JUST MAKE IT 1ST MONDAY IN FEBRUARY!! Problem solved. Everybody's happy 🇦🇺🦘
