Over 100 fires are burning unabated in NSW, with the mercury in western Sydney and Canberra reaching unprecedented numbers

. Penrith has reached its hottest temperature on record of 49C in the early afternoon while Canberra reached its record high of 43.6C, beating the previous record set in 1939. Hot and windy weather is expected to sweep across the state — with authorities predicting conditions worse than those on New Year's Eve.

Firefighters from Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory have travelled to NSW to help fight the fires. In Nowra, smoke and ash is turning the afternoon sky black. Fires are burning out level across the state, with the Green Wattle creek blaze burning north and west of Mittagong of a particular concern for firefighters. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said there is in excess of 3,000 personnel on the ground around the state — “the largest number we’ve ever had,” she said.

State of emergency declared in NSW as thousands flee fire-threatened zones | Sky News AustraliaA state of emergency has been declared for all of NSW, starting on Friday and lasting for one week, as thousands of tourists and residents attempt to leave the state's South Coast ahead of worsening conditions on Saturday.\n\nRural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons har urged people to leave the impacted areas if they can, saying authorities are anticipating “very difficult” conditions over the weekend.\n\n“So we’re going to have a very long, difficult day of hot, dry winds, dominating out of the north, north-west before a southerly change emits.\n\nIt is going to be a very dangerous day.
