A state of emergency has been declared for all of NSW, starting on Friday and lasting for one week, as thousands of tourists and residents attempt to leave the state's South Coast ahead of worsening conditions on Saturday. Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons har urged people to leave the impacted areas if they can, saying authorities are anticipating “very difficult” conditions over the weekend.

It’s going to be a very difficult day”. As of Thursday, there are 113 fires burning across NSW, with more than 4 million hectares burnt. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian urged tourists attempted to leave fire-impacted zones to have “patience”. “I want to thank in particular police, fire rescue personnel who have made sure that where people can have access to main roads, that they can let them through even monitoring them closely, with only letting a few cars through at a time.
