Telstra to stay in Hong Kong ‘anticipating’ it wont be asked for data | zoesam93

Telstra will continue to operate in Hong Kong because it does not anticipate that the new national security laws put in place by Beijing will apply to its business or other global enterprise telco providers.

"We anticipate that requests for co-operation with authorities under the new law will be focused on local retail telcos, ISPs and social media companies and the associated data held by them," a Telstra spokesman said. "Our business in Hong Kong predominantly serves global enterprise and wholesale customers in Asia. We are not a domestic ISP so we don’t have consumer customers and we are not a social media company.

announced on Wednesday that it would relocate its Hong Kong-based digital news operation to Seoul. Virtual Private Network providers - which allow secure connections over the internet - have also fled.

zoesam93 I am pleased I am not a customer!

zoesam93 As is their wont ... Lol

zoesam93 According to the security law, if any company doesn't hand over data upon request, it will be fined and driven out of HK. If the head of any company is considered subversive for not turning in data, the max punishment is life imprisonment! It's up to China to decide!

zoesam93 Xi China 🇨🇳 security law 🇭🇰🇦🇺🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

zoesam93 Telstra leadership is extremely naive. Clearly they are not reading the play of CCP and the control they will thrust upon business.

zoesam93 That's ridiculous

zoesam93 Of course it will! Ffs
