Telco giant Telstra will give 12,000 free mobile phones to customers in “difficult situations” to help them transition to the 4G network, after fears vulnerable people would be unable to contact emergency services when the 3G network shuts down. Telstra said the phones would be given to priority assistance customers who may require “external support transition” when the network shuts down on August 31.

” Customers that Telstra has deemed to be in difficult situations, such as facing financial hardship, recovering from a natural disaster, or customers who depend on a working phone because they are living with a life-threatening medical condition, will be eligible for a free Telstra phone. “Many of these customers are also over 80 years old and living in regional areas, which can make visiting our stores challenging,” consumer segment executive Marty McGrath said.
