An audit of Tasmania's prison system concludes it is an unhealthy workplace with the number of lockdowns increasing.

Tasmania's auditor-general is blaming a 30-per-cent surge in prisoners over the past five years on the Government's family violence and mandatory sentencing agenda, leaving an understaffed Tasmanian Prison Service unable to operate efficiently.

According to the report, average annual inmate numbers rose from 472 to 613 between 2013-14 and 2017-18, an increase of 30 per cent. The report said the increase was due to the Government's reform agenda on family violence and mandatory sentencing, an unprecedented increase in those on remand, and a backlog in the Magistrates Court.

The report comes as Tasmania's Parliament prepares to debate a new government bill next week to introduce mandatory sentences for sexual offences against children and assaults on frontline workers. The report said the Justice Department did not recognise that the increase in prisoner numbers was sustained — rather than an anomaly — until 2016-17.

"In short, [the Tasmanian Prison Service ] did not have enough correctional officers to effectively and efficiently run the prison service," the report said.

Half of Aussies with mental illness say workplace caused itA major new study has found that half of all Australian workers have experienced a mental illness – and 43 per cent of those say their workplace caused it. Lived it. Lost my career 16 years and brought it to the attention of what you trust is the higher governing body. I lost my job while the contributors still sit in theirs getting pay rises on a big salary.I get token emails apologizing for the drawn out investigation. 3 years! geoffrey_payne It's called hating your job/boss/workmates. Get a different job and stop whining. There’s only so much a workplace can do by way of training and work environment. Ultimately people have to deal with their stress levels in whatever situation they find. It should begin in the family home, then at school and sporting activities to prepare them for the workforce.

Prison computer 'not suitable' for Julian Assange, court toldA member of Assange's team said the prison computer was unlikely to have internet access for research. Get the guy a damn computer. Why should he? No prisoner has access to the internet for obvious reasons: Posting to social media Access to porn Access to whatever else And no, blockers don't block everything. He's a convicted criminal and he abides by the rules of incarceration. I wouldn't give him access either, I really don't want to hear any more about him for a long time.
