Sydney's peak hour traffic congestion falls 55 per cent | pallavisinghal_

Sydney's roads at peak hour on Tuesday resembled traffic conditions at the quietest daytime levels last year, amid warnings that social distancing measures may need to stay in place for up to 12 months.

Geoffrey Clifton, a senior lecturer in logistics and transport management at the University of Sydney, said it would fall even further in coming weeks as work and travel patterns changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic."There are still going to be some parents taking their kids to school who haven't made alternative arrangements but we're going to see that fall away even more before it stabilises to just essential travel and home deliveries," Dr Clifton said.

"Weekend sports is out and fewer people are travelling for family visits and social gatherings," he said. "I'm not saying we're going to be in lockdown for that long but we need a treatment for it, the mortality rate for [older people] is unacceptable." "Thank goodness we've [implemented these measures now] because we have a small buffer to get our house in order and allow modern medicine to do its job."School attendance figures show that an average of 45 per cent of students were absent across 1800 Australian schools on Monday, according to data from Compass Education, which is used by most Catholic schools in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
