Billions are flowing into bike lanes in other major cities but in Sydney there is no concrete plan for a connected network until 2056 | Nigelgladstone

Cities around the world are spending billions on bike lanes, but there is still no concrete plan for a connected Sydney bike network until 2056.

Left: Man cycles along Sydney's Liverpool Street. Right: The 2056 Greater Sydney Principal Bicycle Network routes as at 2018The state government and the City of Sydney announced in May the installation of temporary cycleways in Paddington as commuters increasingly choose their bikes over public transport amid the pandemic. However, residents in impacted neighbourhoods said they would suffer the erasure of on-street parking, leading to accessibility issues for the elderly and less mobile.

"The dual benefit now is it allows people to physically distance while travelling and building bike infrastructure is a really good job creator," he said. "Lots of small businesses can help build a bike network. It's not one big project it's a program of lots of little projects." "We could support the plan if we could see what was going on and the upset residents who complain about the loss of parking at the pop-up cycleways might understand the benefits," Ms Wallace said.

"Cities across the world are realising the huge benefits of making it easy for people to ride or walk, but the NSW government's long ideological opposition to bikes now means we're stuck in the slow lane, literally paying for it with more congestion and tolls," Ms Haylen said.
