Exclusive: Sydney public transport revenue ‘stagnating’ as costs mount | Rabe9

The NSW government is struggling to recoup the cost of running its transport system, with a confidential document revealing revenue is “stagnating” and warning it cannot rely on asset recycling to prop up the multibillion-dollar network into the future.and Nine News, says NSW is lagging other major global cities in transport cost recovery and warns financial pressures are mounting.

“However, revenue must be considered alongside other outcomes such as accessibility, equity, and safety.” The losses on public transport are massive compared to other major cities across the world, with London recouping 91 per cent, Toronto 73 per cent and Chicago 55 per cent, according to the report.

The government was warned more than three years ago in the Future Transport Strategy 2056 that it was facing “a growing financial burden”.
