Parents at some Sydney private schools will pay more than $40,000 for their child's year 12 education this year, with fees rising almost $10,000 in seven years despite increased federal government funding for independent schools | natassiazc

Parents at some Sydney private schools will pay more than $40,000 for their child's year 12 education this year, with fees rising almost $10,000 in seven years despiteAdditional technology levies at SCEGGS Darlinghurst and The King's School have pushed final-year fees over $40,000 for the first time.

The King's School in Parramatta will charge $40,714 for year 12 after additional technology and meal fees are included, an increase of $11,809 on raw fees seven years ago.The Scots College and Cranbrook in Bellevue Hill absorb additional levies in their fees.than they did seven years agoHelen Proctor, an education professor at the University of Sydney, said it was "paradoxical" that school fees had risen alongside government subsidies.

"This is a very small and specific group [of schools], but certainly the increasing government subsidisation has resulted in an extraordinary increase in the standard of their facilities and plans," Ms Proctor said. "You have to question whether it’s necessary for these schools to look like five-star hotels.""Schools in systems can affect certain economies by having centralised functions. The very wealthy independent schools have to do everything in-house.

Scots College principal Dr Ian Lambert said the school was "pleased that this year the fee increase has been kept to 3.5 percent".

HkarterKarter natassiazc Stop all federal govt funding. Money saved goes to building public schools to take the extra students who can’t afford the ridiculous fees.

natassiazc Is this where I get to say ‘greedy bastards’

HkarterKarter natassiazc SO?

Wersula natassiazc they should get zero tax dollars. If only one of our over worked incompetents in Canberra bothered with answering a petition it might put an end to the farce of them getting tax dollars DanTehanWannon lift your game. 20 days work since the election

natassiazc Got to keep the riff-raff out somehow. /sarcasm

natassiazc That is private education. They can charge as much as they want. The parents make the final decision on whether the kid(s) goes there.

natassiazc There should be no federal funding. Private means private. You want to be elite & separate, you fund it. The sucking of public money out of the public education system to fund private schools parents have the finances to afford means all other children suffer. Inexcusable greed.

natassiazc It’s a business and people will pay. 🤔

natassiazc Oh well mustn’t grumble

natassiazc Elite private schools shouldn't get a cent of taxpayer dollars, particularly when they simply hoard it.

natassiazc Do “ they” come out any brighter? No! 90 % will end up running the family business, working in the family business, working for a family member, enter into Politics via back door, get Gov job, marry into wealth and vicious cycle continues.

natassiazc Is there any other country in the world which government funds “private” schools?

natassiazc I’m crying my heart out for these poor parents . Boo freaking hoo!

natassiazc Must be nice.

natassiazc No shit!

natassiazc Their choice. Parents can enrol their kids somewhere else if they want.

natassiazc Rising at the same rate as inequality then, nice sort of societal balance.

natassiazc Same article different number at the start of every new school year. Slow day

natassiazc How Good is Greed !

natassiazc All this pay wall does is restrict what sort of demographic of child/family gets in

natassiazc How good is Australia? Is real Australia a lucky country? We are lucky not having Military wars, but the lucky country is like any other country, if your were lucky to find a good job, well pay, you are real lucky, for low pay, under pay, exploited and modern slave workplaces,0 LUCKY

natassiazc Private schools should not receive government funding. If you want to pay the full cost that’s your business.

natassiazc Ms Proctor said. 'You have to question whether it’s necessary for these schools to look like five-star hotels.' Very true Priv schools have prime land n 5stars facility with indoor pool n they r asking for gov subsidy

natassiazc 10% per annum increases will do that you know

natassiazc Poor buggers.

natassiazc well someone is raking in the profits - and meanwhile Commonwealth Govt funding for 'public schools' is far less than what is paid to independent schools xx

natassiazc Send your child there but don't get Government money

natassiazc We all know it has nothing to do with the education these little darlings are receiving..it’s all about WHO they are associating with and who they can call for a cushy job when they leave school

40k is a small price to pay to be better than everyone else.

natassiazc Yep all a scam.

natassiazc Private Schools are an absolute and utter waste of money. It’s a rort and a con- they should get zero government funding.

natassiazc Private schools are a rort. They will milk the population as long as they are willing to pay. Some put Profit before results.

natassiazc So what. If you don't like the fees don't send your kid there. Simple really.

natassiazc They could always choose their local comprehensive State High School!!

natassiazc mscott BrionyScott And the only school on the list that does any good is highly selective Gramnar who’s slipped from 3rd to 4th in rankings amongst a load of public schools. NSW lowest in Aus as OECD PISA Aussi results fall every time since 2000. ‘Fiddling while Rome burns.’

natassiazc That's almost double the full age pension. And they get government funding as well, while we have charities begging to help provide decent clothing for state school children. Oh we've got our priorities right in the lucky country, that's for sure.

natassiazc Who has time to hate on those that do or don’t. I have never heard a parent who has sent their child to a private school hate on those that don’t.

natassiazc Families should be means tested for fees at Government schools and some independent schools with funding allocated based on wealth of the school community. I saw a lot of parents with significant wealth paying the fee minimum. Private Schools should be out.

natassiazc Mostly waste of money but hey... if you can afford it, why not. Young people coming from these schools are not prepared for much and many end up finishing some university degree waiting for parents to help them find a job or continue supporting them in some way.

natassiazc Having put my daughter through 13 years of private school I can say it was worth every cent privateschool education

natassiazc Yet inflation is under 2%. Interesting isn’t it.

natassiazc who’d have guessed that government funding private schools’ amphitheaters, swimming pools, tennis courts and rowing sheds would increase fees 🤔

SElizaP natassiazc More fool them !

natassiazc It's been going on for ages and you geniuses just figured it out FFS

natassiazc People with more money than sense

GailCoastie natassiazc If they want to send their children to these private schools the government shouldn't be handing out taxpayers cash to these elete schools eneogh is enough

natassiazc Gosh maybe build more gov schools with faculties equal to those of elite private schools ?
