Sydney nurses and midwives have walked off the job in their hundreds in what they say is a desperate bid to increase hospital staffing levels | daniellamariewh marywardy _SarahMcPhee

Sydney nurses and midwives have walked off the job in their hundreds in what they say is a desperate bid to increase hospital staffing levels.

Nurses at Lismore Base Hospital on Thursday stopped work from 3.30pm for 15 1/2 hours, to 7am on Friday. On Monday five hospital beds were closed at Yass.Last week, about 500 nurses and midwives walked off the job or closed beds in public health sites at Belmont, Blue Mountains, Bowral, John Hunter, Shoalhaven, Springwood and Waratah, because of the conditions and pressures they say they are forced to work under.

Health Services Union NSW secretary Gerard Hayes on Wednesday said paramedics would proceed despite orders from the Industrial Relations Commission to suspend the action.Asked about recent industrial action taken by paramedics, Health Minister Brad Hazzard said on Thursday morning “there’s nobody in NSW who doesn’t value” the workforce’s contribution.

Mr Hazzard said he and Treasurer Dominic Perrottet had been in “good discussion” with the HSU regarding the wage dispute, spending an hour in discussions on Wednesday.

daniellamariewh marywardy _SarahMcPhee Stop printing money and increasing the inequality gap

daniellamariewh marywardy _SarahMcPhee Pay and working conditions are in need of extreme upgrade to attract more workers. Why work for peanuts while getting PTSD? Then you can't afford the mental health treatment.

daniellamariewh marywardy _SarahMcPhee Good luck to them. Nurses, predominantly female, do the dirty work and heavy lifting while doctors, predominantly male, get the money. There is no workplace more elitist and sexist than medical care. It needs a massive shake-up to correct inherent inequities.
