The practice has seen the western Sydney school shrink the number of students achieving bottom grades by 50 to 75 per cent, and students now set additional goals for each subject. But the question Ms Cawsey starts with is simple: what can I improve in six months if I change what I’m doing? The study, co-produced by UNSW and the Education Department’s statistics unit, examined the impact of “growth goal setting” - specific, self-referenced goals geared towards achieving students’ personal best - by surveying 61,879 year 7 to 10 students across 290 public schools in NSW.
Ms Cawsey has been doing this with her students for about 10 years, holding one-on-one or small group sessions at the beginning and end of each semester. “When students set goals, it actually appears they make gains because they’re more likely to be persistent, to aspire to get the goal achieved, and see the work that they’re doing as relevant,” she said.
Researcher Ian McCarthy, the co-director of strategic analysis and research in the department’s Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation, said the study would offer significant lessons.
