A Sydney man has become the second gay Australian to contract HIV despite taking medication that promises to prevent the spread of the disease.

Australian Society for Sexual Health Medicines Associate Professor Edwina Wright said that method involved taking two tablets before sex and another two in the following 48 hours."We're still waiting on further studies to see whether it's just as effective as taking it daily."

Associate Professor Wright said not everyone was comfortable taking daily medication, due to the cost or toxicity, while others don't have enough sex to justify it.Mr Spencer started HIV treatment the day he was diagnosed and after six weeks his viral load was undetectable, meaning the virus is unable to be transmitted during sexual intercourse."I can acknowledge why people would be fearful of this or have concerns for themselves or their loves ones," he said.

"I'm may be a little unlucky, but that's how the cookie crumbles and I am not angry at all, I don't hold a grudge."

Who cares

well 99% says that 1 in 100 should still contract it 86%.. thats 14 in every 100 i wouldnt bet on 86% i wouldnt even bet on 99%, i dont bet :P

Why even risk it. Play Russian roulette and yeah 😔 Now what's the cost to not only yourself. 😔

Don't walk across traffic Stay away from the pool Don't stand under trees in storms Keep you pen in it's pocket

I have a solution to HIV. Wait till marriage! (Also not being gay helps)

I am curious as to how this mans sexual preference is relevant to the story such that it’s in the first sentence. Let’s not reminisce of the stories in the 80’s that made this HIV/AIDS a ‘gay disease’.

Why are you claiming an exclusive when other media are running the same story at the same time with the same image? It’s not an exclusive ABCmediawatch

This is an inaccurate tweet. Read the article and you’ll see he took the half-arsed approach, if you’ll execuse the expression. What a goose he sounds; ‘coming out ‘ for HIV on a Mardi Gras float etc. etc.

hamadahamada133 And, he is known for his active drug use so I doubt he has been stringent with his dosing of PrEP

So sorry for him!

Clever dicks wear headgear.

MarieCo92176893 Kaubo Hope the parents of the kid are happy now! Stupid anti-vaxxers putting every child around them at risk. Anti social pro-plaguers! Kaubo How did that happen ?🤔 they must have listened to Pete Evans. Kaubo It's time un-vaccinated kids are banned from public schools. If parents wish to be so selfish as to put not only their own kids but the general population at risk, they can jolly well home school their kids.
