Another season, another grand final for Sydney FC, who are on the cusp of becoming the first team in the A-League era to win three successive titles

Another season, another grand final and another major record in sight for Sydney FC who are on the cusp of becoming the first team in the A-League era to win three successive titles after a narrow 2-1 victory over Adelaide United in the semi-final.

However, an error from goalkeeper James Delianov undid their bright opening. Beaten by Kosta Barbarouses to the ball, Delianov collected the Sydney winger inside the box but looked to have been rescued by referee Alireza Faghani, who had no interest in awarding the Sky Blues a penalty. The replays supported Sydney’s protests, so too the video assistant referee, and the Sky Blues were eventually awarded the penalty.

For the first 10 years of his life, M’Mombwa survived as a refugee in Africa. As an infant, his family fled their home in Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo when violence erupted in the build-up to the brutal Second Congo War. They sought asylum in Mozambique, then Zimbabwe, but the economic crash of the mid 2000s and subsequent violence caused widespread suffering.

Throughout, football was an escape for M’Mombwa who would play for hours a day with his brothers and friends.Even when his parents’ application to move to Australia as refugees was approved when he was 10, football was the furthest thing from his mind.
