Exclusive: The City of Sydney has cancelled this year’s New Year’s Eve family fireworks display despite NSW's scheduled reopening in the coming weeks | michaelkoziol

The City of Sydney has cancelled this year’s New Year’s Eve family fireworks display despite the state’s scheduled reopening in the coming weeks, saying the move is necessary to keep the event “resilient” amid the uncertainty of COVID-19.

“This format will allow Sydney New Year’s Eve to remain resilient in the face of continuing uncertainty and help stakeholders, businesses and visitors formulate their plans,” wrote City of Sydney crowd and traffic manager Lauren Schwabe. The City of Sydney has resumed responsibility for this year’s event. A council spokesman confirmed the 9pm display would not occur.“The fireworks always generate very large crowds and the two separate displays result in the crossover of large numbers of people leaving for one show and arriving for the next,” he said.“In the current climate, limiting this mixing of crowds will ensure the event can be managed in the most COVID-safe way for all attendees and staff.

michaelkoziol With all the normal no-drinking restrictions in place in parks, Sydney's NYE celebrations have been boring for years anyway. So who cares.

michaelkoziol aw shucks...

michaelkoziol Just replay any of the previous year’s shows, same thing really

michaelkoziol Everyone who can get a flight out of here will not be in Sydney!

michaelkoziol Give the kids something after a hard year. Horrible

michaelkoziol It’s only the 9pm show. Just have the midnight show and be done with it

michaelkoziol Make it permanent!

michaelkoziol Makes sense.

michaelkoziol Surely we’re mid-80’s percentage over 12yo’s by then. At what percentage do we get back to normal?!?

michaelkoziol

michaelkoziol Great, will save the state how many millions ?

michaelkoziol By NYE, surely we’re mid to high 80%…..the rest can stay home and whinge

michaelkoziol The far right media is 💯 to blame for the far right rioters. Thanks to Murdoch Newscorp outlets: 3AW, Neil Mitchell, Tom Elliott, Heidi Murphy, Foxtel, Sky News, Peta Credlin, Peter Costello’s Nine Media, Herald Sun, The Australian. Just to mention a few.

michaelkoziol Let’s cancel fun. It’s so risky. Let’s have permanent lockdowns. After all, staying ‘safe’ is the only thing, literally the only thing, that matters.

michaelkoziol This literally makes zero sense

michaelkoziol

michaelkoziol someone has brains in Sydney well done city of sydney

michaelkoziol Might be good to specify it is just the 9pm family fireworks in the headline.
