DFES says the fire, which ignited in March, will continue to burn until significant rainfall arrives.

What's next?As an extended and tough bushfire season comes to a close in southern Western Australia, a blaze burning underground is posing a serious challenge for authorities.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services South West Superintendent Andy Wright says it will take significant rainfall to fully extinguish the fire."The fire caught onto the swamp area, which has peat made up of dense vegetation," Superintendent Wright said. "What we don't want is for that fire to suddenly burn under where we had a mineral earth-break and pop up on the other side.Superintendent Wright said containing the fire was all that could be done until more rain came.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.Plan for a Heatwave'Those were the last words he spoke to me': Friends of killed camper Russell Hill give evidence in murder trial
