Supporters of the family of slain woman Celeste Manno have rallied in Melbourne to call for mandatory life sentences for murder.
Demonstrators marched from Parliament House to the Supreme Court of Victoria shouting: "Celeste deserves justice.""We don't sentence murderers to life in this state ... because of the brutality of the crime or because of premeditation. But even then, it had to be heavily redacted, she said, a devastating blow because she was forced to omit extra information about Sako she had been hoping to tell the court."It comes with nine 'don'ts'. And so we stuck to that guideline as much as we could."
Justice Jane Dixon imposed a 36-year sentence on February 29, with a non-parole period of 30 years. Sako, now 39, has already served about three years in pre-sentence custody.
