A young Melbourne woman has been charged following an investigation by the Australian Federal Police and the corporate regulator into a major fraud and identity theft syndicate involving some of the country's biggest superannuation funds.
"We allege the woman attempted to steal $1.5 million as part of a sophisticated global network," he told a press conference on Tuesday. Acting Commander Goldsmith said the total fraud could be as high as $10 million.The super funds affected include Club Plus Superannuation, HESTA, Hostplus, AustralianSuper and LUCRF Superannuation.
The court heard on Tuesday that the Derrimut mother and her alleged accomplices, known only as "Moneymonkey", "H", "Elvy X", "Steven Rocks" and "Kevin Butwell", changed the dates of birth on victims' superannuation accounts in order to withdraw money. The alleged fraud ring sent debit cards for those bank accounts to a third party in Hong Kong, who withdrew the money, used it to buy and then sell high-end jewellery before transferring a cut of the profits to the syndicate using cryptocurrency.
