Editorial: Enough already with these farcical palace coups

would signal an end to the leadership instability of the past 10 years. After a decade where two ALP and two Liberal elected prime ministers were knifed by their colleagues because of factional infighting, it seemed reasonable to hope for a fresh start. It all reeks of taking voters for granted. The government is on a slim majority and cannot afford to be over-confident. It was riding high after the election win and the revelations against the ALP at the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

But the coup and the coincidental standing aside of Sports Minister John Sidoti over another ICAC investigation on Tuesday could quickly wipe the smile off the government’s face.Despite the failure of the coup, there is still a view that somehow the brawl over the abortion bill will damage Ms Berejiklian.

Her critics are claiming that Ms Berejiklian could have found a less divisive way to manage this conscience vote. Yet the experience of the marriage equality debate at a federal level shows that there can be value in allowing a free debate. The Liberal Party was only dragged kicking and screaming to a conscience vote on same-sex marriage but the very public argument allowed it to deal with the issue once and for all.

Similarly, once a sensible bill on abortion, which would bring NSW into line with other states, is passed, voters will give some of the credit to Ms Berejiklian and the Liberals. The party will show that it is governing from the centre and for the voters rather than in the interests of which faction is willing to play the dirtiest.editor Lisa Davies writes a weekly newsletter exclusively for subscribers.

Very good editorial. The attempted spill was ridiculous and I hope the miscreants suffer from a career perspective from their attempts to drag a conscience vote into a party issue, regardless of popular support

The urn will return, but Australia's selection dilemmas still as clear as mudApart from resolving some questions that were largely already answered, there remains great uncertainty over the Australian side, particularly in the batting ranks. Excellent analysis by Ian Chappell. However he has missed citing the poor referrals by Australia with DRS, as well as some very poor umpiring decisions which heavily went against Australia - especially in the first three Tests.
