Sudan has criminalised female genital mutilation , making it punishable by three years in jail, a move campaigners said ushered in a"new era" for women's rights in the African nation.
Women's rights groups said the punishment would help to end FGM, but warned it would be difficult to change minds in communities that view the traditional practice as necessary to marry their daughters. An estimated 200 million girls and women worldwide have undergone FGM, which is practised in at least 27 African countries and parts of Asia and the Middle East. Girls can bleed to death or die from infections, while FGM can also cause fatal childbirth complications later, say health experts. In Sudan, more than three-quarters of procedures are conducted by nurses, midwives or other medical personnel, says anti-FGM campaign group 28 Too Many.
The transitional government has pledged to prioritise the women's rights and Prime Minister Abdulla Hamdok has appointed women to cabinet positions of foreign affairs, youth and sports, higher education and labour and social development.
YES YES YES. GET OUT OF BC.
You do know how this works? 1. Sudan passes a law against FGM 2. Everybody ignores said law 3. Backslapping and handshakes from the UN 4. UN increases 'implementation' cash handouts to hand-picked members of the kleptocracy 5. Repeat 1 - 4 in neighbouring failed states
The law, and enforcing it in practice, are two completely different things in Sudan
No one will adhere to that law however

HiboWardere one step closer
So is murder but people still do it....will continue
As if it will be enforced!
hajrakn thats great and all but why did you have to mention “predominantly muslim” smh
Ivory and rhino horn is illegal in China but still happens. FGM happens in Australia so what’s the prospect it stops in Sudan?
Why did you have to put 'Muslim' it has nothing to do with being Muslim. Why do you practice such filthy journalism?
Dorothy23897725 Illegal? And no one will enforce it. What a joke!
Yer ! Islam moving closer to the 21st century . Only a few hundred years to go .
It's has nothing to do with Islam. Part of Sudanese culture.
Yea right and when the complaints pile up because it’s is still going on, the authorities will turn a blind eye. Typical politics that never gets scrutiny, condemn it but let it continue.
Excellent news! Congratulations Sudan!
Yeah good luck enforcing that! It's illegal here in the UK, but haven't made an arrest yet. Because of 'cultural sensitivities.'
Lol Africans.
Absolutely fantastic news
Genital mutilation shud punishable by death, one off the g8est acts of torture goin around😡
If they prosecute offenses they'll be leading UK/Australia.
devalara44 Yay!! What does being Muslim have to do with FGM? It's a cultural practice, not religious one right? Unlike Male genital mutilation.. which is religious. When will we get that to stop!
martaduss Did anybody tell the village chiefs, grandparents and moms? Asking for a friend.
Won't stop them.Australia has young people mutilated who have travelled o/seas to have the procedure. With the virus ceasing travel they will only find a local mutilator.
YES! About time
About time !
Awesome.
Meanwhile people calling themselves 'activists' want to mutilate male genitals in Australia, by cutting them off completely, and they call it 'progress.'
I'm glad it's become illegal but you need to understand it is a cultural thing and not a religious one.
❤️
Thank you for speaking up.
