A proposed east coast base for submarines would challenge Australia’s adversaries, experts say.

Australian submarines will be able to operate deeper into the Pacific and find it easier to sail undetected to the South China Sea and East China Sea under the plans to re-establish an east coast base for the proposed nuclear-powered submarine fleet.

Addressing the Lowy Institute foreign policy think-tank, Mr Morrison said China’s military actions had “disturbed” the regional status quo.“heralds a moment of choice for China” and its commitment to global peace and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, although the early signs were not good, citing increased purchases of Russian wheat.“It is up to China, at this hinge point of history, to demonstrate these are more than just words,” the PM said.

“What we had was a drop to the papers about how there was an announcement about there being an announcement down the track,” said Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese, who also complained he hadn’t been briefed beforehand. Australia Strategic Policy Institute defence, strategy and national security program director Michael Shoebridge said an east coast base would eliminate the transit time for submarines to operate in the western Pacific, as well as avoiding sailing through the Indonesian archipelago to reach the South China Sea.“You can control the choke points through the archipelago from west coast basing. You can avoid them from east coast basing and have a different way of getting into north Asia.
