A new submarine base will be built on Australia’s east coast to support the future nuclear-powered fleet being acquired under the AUKUS partnership, with Defence identifying Brisbane, Newcastle and Port Kembla as the most suitable locations.

The Prime Minister will announce a new "future submarine base" for Australia's east coast to accommodate a nuclear fleet

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will unveil the plan in a national security speech on Monday, where he will warn the strategic, political, economic and social implications of Russia's invasion of Ukraine will "inevitably stretch to the Indo-Pacific". "Fleet Base West will remain home to our current and future submarines, given its strategic importance on the Indian Ocean."

A government source confirmed the Defence Department had recently identified Port Kembla as being the most suitable location, requiring the least amount of additional work.

As long as it's nowhere near me. In fact, let's make it in another country, on another planet, that doesn't exist.

CallTheElection Australian’s have had enough.

Still Yet Another Empty Morrison Announceable brought to you by The Khaki Election Campaign, and Their ABC.

This is like bending yourself and asking China to pat on your bum. FFs cover west as well.

Submarine base? Huge target in a wartime scenario if it got that far. Opportunity to administer some pre-election pork-barreling here by the Government. What electorates need a Coalition boost? Brisbane, Newcastle or Port Kembla?

CLICK BAIT NONSENSE

Another announcement.

Brisbane. The others are busy mining based operations with ships all over the world. Would be a security nightmare. However Brisbane is not a great option as the base would have to be purpose built. Cairns - nope to shallow water for too far off coast, Townsville same.

Doesn’t really matter we all know if Morrison announces something it won’t happen

ABC doing the coalition’s testing the waters campaigning are they? Have you become part of the propaganda machine as well? ThisisNotJournalism

None of those cities have nuclear capability. In fact all of Australia doesn’t have nuclear capability. This is just one big excuse to build one or two nuclear power plants which is what the LNP have always wanted to do. Pandering to the Coalition.

Seriously⁉️ Morrison and the LNP to build nuclear submarines in collaboration with China 🇨🇳 (Port of Newcastle) and the UAE 🇦🇪 (Port Kembla)⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️

The world's largest coal port, AND a nuclear submarine base.. Oh and the thousands of tons of explosives manufactured at Kooragang. That's Newcastle on the 'first strike' list then

We get subs that do 60kph and Russia has hypersonic missiles that do Moscow to Brisbane in 8 minutes. Who makes these decisions. And who's getting kickback from the deal

Great, let's spend billions on subs that can do 60kph to protect a coastline of 27,000+ km China will have to make an appointment so we can get there in time. Then one missile, location known, bye sub. Someone's getting kickback from this deal.

Let’s consider reestablishing ownership and control of the ports in Australia before we decide how to use them ?

The guy who is in charge of this made it all the way up the ranks of the Queensland police force to 'Senior Constable'...

Nơi nào có ý chí, nơi đó có con đường.

China leased Newcastle harbour for 99 years and Abu Dhabi leased Port Kembler for 99 years. I suppose we could rent part of their leasehold back so we can put our subs in what was once our harbour.

Vote this government out!

Port Kembla won’t get it even if defence thinks it’s best option; it’s in a safe labor seat.

What subs ? Great to have a base. Not so good to have an empty one.

What a shame the Liberal government of NSW leased the Port of Newcastle to the Chinese then ay..

Are people that gullible they believe this bs

Ignorant destructive idiots. Destroying the earth from with in. Earth took billions of years to create the ozone layer to protect us from radiation. Idiots controlling obsessed find a way to create radiation from within.

They must be thrilled…

should be one in every state

Do you think that’s wise? Chinese own 50% of Port Newcastle or is it Russia we don’t want here this week?

FFS, , you know, I know, the Govt knows that this will never happen. Maybe be a little bit sceptical and look behind the words, to the reality.

Yes it's true we only have 80k military including reserves whilst our potential foes have many millions of military but sure build some subs for the future and if we get attacked in the meantime just tell them we wasn't ready yet 👌

The government are showing their ignorance if they believe submarines can defend Australia from attacks that will most likely come from the air.

Sort of like building a garage thirty years before you buy a car.

I suppose the people currently renting the port of Darwin don't want them based there? 🤔 auspoI AUKUS LNPfail

Really think a sub base is required up around Port Head land or Broome on upper west coast. There is absolutely nothing between Perth and Darwin. Sort of a wide open door to pinch our iron ore resources from under our nose. And who ya gunna call?

Please be Port Kembla. The Illawarra desperately needs some sort of economic injection, especially Port Kembla itself with the steelworks being wound back

The Brisbane line still exists.

Jervis Bay. Keep those things out of densely populated areas.

Out of the coal frying pan, and into an even more dangerous nuclear submarine base.

In 2070 or 2080 or maybe 3000.. or never.

Fck. no thanks

What is the plan to increase the 80k military ? 500k more soldiers sounds like a pretty good target to me start training more soldiers IMO we need soldiers

Why bother. It will never happen under this govt. why? Either: 1. They won’t be in govt, or 3. They ever deliver on their announcements
