Australia is making a clear choice of the US over China with the AUKUS pact - and the fundamental decision is bipartisan | OPINION submarines aukus

Australians have found out the hard way that there is a price to pay for having six defence ministers in eight years in a volatile time in a changing region.

There is no easy way to measure the cost in lost time and confused strategy, but there is no doubt the damage is real – and confirmed by the very need for what Prime Minister Scott Morrison calls a “forever partnership” with the United States and Britain to build nuclear submarines. Morrison presents the pact as the result of changes overseas. First, he points to the advent of nuclear submarines that Australia can maintain without needing a civil nuclear energy program. Second, he names the willingness of the US to share technology Australia has wanted for decades.

Really? This is so overdramatic. We already have an alliance with the US(have a base in Darwin) and the UK(obviously). This is a poorly thought out 'rebranding.' China is irritated because we have embarrassed them; it's not like they didn't see this coming. They aren't stupid.

Let’s fight against dictatorship

What a waste of money and time on useless submarines. Better spent on renewables we can all use. ActOnClimate

More like a RAUKUS. Heaps of announcements over the decade about military hardware purchase, yet nothing to show for it. Bring out your pitch folks!

Not sure there was any real choice. Could hardly trust China so what’s the options

Yep have trust in that fellow from Down Under, Thanks Pal!! What are the other consequences of this agreement

We could have had 1 or 50 defence ministers in said time? Noe of that would have made any difference in chins

Labor doesn't have to do anything, everything this clown does digs his own grave

I can’t see why we had to have this big announcement. To show China there is an alliance I suppose. Isn’t defence suppose to be a secret?

big mistake...egos.

This pact ties Australia to any US military engagement against ChinaIt amounts to dramatic loss of sovereignty, writes the former Australian prime minister. A really dumb move. But what would you expect? Morrison has made it his goal to put us at loggerheads with China since he became PM. Best Prime Minister in my lifetime. But can’t agree with his anti-US, pro-China stance, even though some of the points are valid Australia is tied to any US engagement and Paul Keating knows this.
