Australians have named extreme weather as the top priority for new infrastructure planning as the Morrison government prepares a wave of spending on major projects in the October budget.

Preparing for extreme weather events such as floods and fires was considered a major priority among 68 per cent of respondents and a minor priority among another 26 per cent.Infrastructure Australia, which guides governments and business, found a similar concern about planning for diseases and pandemics.

Ms Alroe, who was chief executive of Brisbane Airport for nine years, said new spending was not enough if the industry was not equipped to deliver the projects needed.
