In 2016, curators at the State Library of Victoria were asked to retrieve an important set of 18th-century books on the study of insects.
A diplomat who travelled the world to serve in places such as Brazil and Thailand , Castelnau was also an amateur naturalist who studied insects and fish. He moved to Melbourne in 1862, bringing his collection with him. Before his death and the donation of his books to the library, Castelnau had sold 10,800 beetle specimens to the museum in 1863. But there was something intriguing about his collection.
"And then you realise that some of the specimens are a bit flatter. When you look closer you realise they're pictures." Castelnau's books will be shown together with his specimen drawers for the first time at the State Library as part of its "World of the book" exhibition.
