A state of fire emergency has been declared in 42 local government areas in Queensland.

More than 1,200 firefighters are battling more than 50 blazes across the state. Some residents have been allowed to return home, but thousands have been forced to flee.

There are unconfirmed reports more than 15 structures have been damaged or destroyed. The state is expected to have its worst conditions on Wednesday. Image: News Corp Australia
