When the first NASA SpaceX test flight to carry humans lifts off from Cape Canaveral tomorrow morning, there will be more than just national pride riding on its success.

The historic mission also opens up a world of space travel that could benefit nations such as Australia, said Australian-born astronaut Andy Thomas.

"It's going to be a very good thing to open up space to a wider audience than just specialist NASA astronauts."Massive transformation of NASA and the space industry "We've gone from the 1960s, when the government was involved to a time now where we've got businesses working and thinking about how to be involved in space."

"In the past, NASA has contracted to launch services on a fixed fee basis, and contracting companies have provided technical knowledge but NASA has basically run the show."Andy Thomas discusses how NASA's space program — and the skills needed to be an astronaut — have changed over time.

Isn’t there enough junk in space already?

Prepare oneself for some major catastrophes!
