The Orroral Valley bushfire, which is threatening homes near Canberra's heavily populated southern suburbs, has prompted ACT authorities to declare a state of emergency for the first time since the 2003 disaster. The ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has warned families to prepare for the “worst possible situation” ahead of worsening conditions this weekend. “There is now no higher priority for the entire ACT government at this time than this bushfire threat,” he said.
Authorities fear an inferno burning 40km south-west of Canberra will reach devastating levels of intensity over the weekend. The concern is the blaze could be as dangerous as the one in 2003 that killed four people and destroyed in excess of 500 homes. Meanwhile, two emergency warnings are in place across Victoria and residents in Cape Conran have been advised to leave immediately and for those in the Bendoc region to take shelter.

Weed legal in the ACT from todayThe ACT has become the first Aussie state to legalise cannabis, with Canberrans now allowed to own the drug and even grow the plant at home. Yes, but they cannot buy the drug or the seeds required to grow it. Plus they would have to be very small plants not to exceed the maximum amount permissible to possess. Yet another ridiculous set of laws. Federal politicians are going to become even more dopey. So now that you are allowed to grow 2 cannabis plants PP (limit of 4 per house) in the ACT - my question is where do you buy the seeds? Or do you have to buy the seeds off the local Meth/Heroin dealer? If you even know anyone like that?
