Smoke on the water: How Queensland's Fraser Island is rising from the ashes | mattdennien

Evan Quartermain, the head of programs for Humane Society International Australia, says they approached the government with a pitch to help assess the situation. The society was swiftly directed to a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service wary of allowing more people on the still-ablaze island closed to visitors.

Many voiced their concerns at forums held this week as part of the government inquiry, spearheaded by the Inspector General of Emergency Management.Restrictions on international travel, which accounted for the vast majority of their business, hit Ms Robinson and her partner hard. For more than a decade on the island, the pair has offered accommodation and run tours — now under the banner of K'gari Fraser Island Adventures.

An expert recovery unit has been set up after the fire to carry out still-ongoing ecological assessments, a Queensland Environment and Science Department spokesman says. “Rangers on K’gari have held multiple information sessions for residents and tourism operators regarding the fire recovery process,” the department spokesman says.

Success. A young female known as Yellow Tag trots past the dozens of parked four-wheel-drives, sniffing and scratching at the sand. It is the first and only sighting between 7am to 5pm, leaving the group disappointed but not despondent because dingoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Cheryl Bryant, the dingo advocacy group’s publicity officer, has a succinct view. “There’s enough destruction over [here] at the moment without people driving up on the sand dunes,” she says.October 14: Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers find an illegal campfire in the Duling Camp Zone of Eastern Beach.November 27: Visitors barred from visiting the island after little success holding the fire front and encroachment on built-up tourist areas.
