Plastic straw ban delayed as coronavirus reveals hygiene benefits of single-use items

A ban on some single-use plastics will be pushed back in South Australia to allow restaurants and cafes to use disposable items to improve hygiene amid the coronavirus pandemic.Banning single-use plastics will be postponed in the hope cafes and restaurants can open soonerBut reference to the previous intended start date of June 30 has been removed

Chief executive Wes Lambert said disposable or laminated menus, plastic cutlery and single-use condiment packaging could all be on the table during the pandemic. "Menus on the table would have to go — they'd have to be disposable or laminated to wipe off — and you'd have to have disposable or recycled cutlery," he said."It may be that for a short time the packaged, plastic cutlery is the safest, and the recyclable cutlery is the next safest, and the next alternative is cleaning metal cutlery.

Mr Speirs said a start date for the ban, June 30, had now been removed from the legislation currently before State Parliament.

Ban on plastic straws delayed? Paper straws are single use, so get rid of plastic straws....

The irony 🤣🤣🤣

Plastic bags also

Imagine that.

Oops!

So, um, what, you're meant to use paper straws more than once?

So what about hygiene standards once the Coronavirus is over, is there an acceptable risk of infection in order to stop using single use plastic straws?

This position doesn’t make sense. Has anyone successfully used a paper straw twice? The ones I’ve had barely last one milkshake.

Straw are hard to clean

😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That is good. Paper straws don't work.

Hahaha

Sorry did I miss the part where paper straws are multi use items?

Bring back the bags

AKA look before you leap

Who gets paid for such insightful information?

use your mouth

Imagine my shock.

Might I ask? What plastic straw ban was currently 'in place' & when was it planned for? It's fine to have sprouted ideas BUT I am not aware of ANY legislation relating to a 'timed ban' of plastic straws. What was this ban that has been delayed? When has it been delayed from?

You can still use paper straws, come on!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bugger the turtles!!

As we used to say in the 70's 'derrr'

This is hilarious!

If you need it due to a disability that's one thing. Otherwise what is wrong with drinking from a cup.

Backwards, yep thats the way to go forward.... everyone just gas yourselves now...

Just do not use a straw unless medically need to..

Paper straws somehow responsible for spreading disease?

Only dirty hippies want to return to the dark ages of unsanitary practices...

But what about the penguins

Banning plastic straws? Pathetic.

Pathetic. It’s all about us and not the planet.

😂 oh the left.. you make me laugh..

Lol

Do these enviro people realise how many of the thicker 15c plastic bags are ending up in landfill? I use them to line our bath bin and then they end in weekly rubbish removal. Wouldn't it be better to use the old 'single use' plastic bags?

What next a plastic straw taken off the SS police list.

Now this is hilarious. The go greeners are willing to kill us all so they can ban plastic straws.

What a cop out. BYO metal straw. Not hard. Clean it properly at home. That's what I do/did (back in the day when bars were open!)

There are plenty of 100% biodegradable straws in Australia, why would we go back to plastic.

are they not washing re-usable items? one would think that would be the bigger worry?

Unfortunately the banning of plastic straws has come far to late to save dinosaurs

Grass straws would be just as good if they were waxed smooth.

Straws don’t have to be made of plastic!

We dont need straws at all plastic or otherwise. If umbilical about them then paper straws if you must. If paper alternatives aren’t available then manage drinking out of the glass, can or bottle. Totally unnecessary item. Can manage juice boxes without straw when its missing.

China hasnt just left a wake of dead bodies & mass infections with its plague , its caused huge knock on effects from PPE , to mass hand sanitiser requirements to suicides Who knew the could pollute the world even more than already have Better buy more crap from them as a reward

Let's not go backwards

Oh good, maybe that will give them time to... oh, I don't know ... maybe LISTEN TO DISABLED PEOPLE!! strawban accessibility

SIGH

Exactly! It’s no coincidence how quickly this disease has spread since do-gooders decided to ban single use disposable items. I don’t want my take away coffee being made on a machine that has just made someones in a keeper cup.Imagine they haven’t washed their hands or their cup!

Douglas Adams wrote about this in Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. They banished the telephone sanitizers and then everyone died of a disease spread by telephones.

I would have thought washing with soap and water was a technological breakthrough we'd already made. People are just lazy and greedy. There is zero excuse for single use.

Apart from the hygiene risks of touching 10 other straws to pull one out...🙄
