It is common for people to criticise how serious car crashes are reported, especially on social media, so where should journalists draw the line?

"The question then becomes 'Are we prepared to abandon our professional and ethical obligations in order to be just as grotesque as a member of the public who isn't bound to those standards?'" Dr Muller said. While there are exceptions, Dr Muller said it was in the interest of media organisations to uphold basic standards.

"If you're running Channel Nine or the ABC or the Age, and you publish grotesque photographs, then people are apt to switch off or cancel the paper," he said. Why show these images at all? According to the Federal Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities, there were 1,148 road deaths in 2018."Car accidents where people have died or many are injured are a matter of obvious public interest," Dr Muller said.

"It goes to the whole question of what's going on in the world, questions about road safety, about the road toll, perhaps the state of the road. Often there'll be questions of causation. When done correctly, Dr Muller said publishing images of a crash scene can"illustrate what's happened". "It might be the issue of a level crossing's safety, or it might be an issue concerning the competency of a bus company, or might just have to do with the state of the roads," he said.

Should be more worried about preventing them from happening. The Hume Highway and the M5 have a ridiculous amount of speeding idioc drivers on it and there is NO speed cameras and NO police. TransportforNSW

Let's be honest..everyone wants to get that gruesome closeup pic but in reality and morally.. we should report with facts and images but not to the point of wanting to see the actual dead body. It is too easy nowadays to get our phones,,see an accident and take a picture to post.

Not vicarious liability as their enployer ? This 'Disruption' situation is horrific, employers has all the rights, and none of the responsibilities. This is bizarre. The US is an IR wild west.
