The terrifying air battles over Darwin during World War II are sometimes forgotten in Australia's wartime memory. But new discoveries from these battles are still being made 76 years on.

On June 30, 1943, Flight Sergeant Colin Duncan and his squadron of spitfires took off on a mission to intercept Japanese aircraft over Darwin. The crash site has remained untouched for 76 yearsBut while the ensuing battle has for decades been marked in folklore, the whereabouts of Duncan's shotThe spitfire A58-2 Duncan was flying caught fire, engulfing the cabin in flames and sending the aircraft plummeting towards the ground in a spiral dive.

Desperate to escape, the rip cord to release his aircraft canopy failed, leaving Duncan scrambling to force it off and struggle out of the aircraft to parachute to the ground.

Yes we were heavily attacked in 1943 with Darwin ..and it all could very well happen again! 😐

It’s a Spitfire, not a spitfire. A rip cord opens a parachute, not a cockpit canopy.

It had been located. The RAAF is hardly the bastion if this knowledge considering wrecks either don't get reported or when they do, they don't care.

Hope that it will be preserved in a museum for the next generation instead of rusting away.

War hero casts doubt on joining force given leadership | Sky News AustraliaAustralia’s most decorated war hero Ben Roberts-Smith expressed doubt about whether it is a “good option” for people to join the Defence Force given the current state of its leadership. \n\n'Defence doesn’t look at veterans as part of their own anymore,' he said. \n\nMr Roberts-Smith described support services for veterans as lacking, saying “at any point you could be injured, leave and not be supported in a way that is expected and that you should be supported because you have chosen to serve'.\n\nHe added access to support is imperative as every veteran is affected by their service in some way. \n\n“No one leaves the Defence Force without being affected in some regard,” he said. It’s never a good idea in the first place. He’s right, given the feedback I’ve had from close friends 16 years in service. I've never served but I find that an odd thing for him say. You serve your country not the leadership.
