An Australian Bureau of Statistics survey found 5 million women and 2.2 million men have experienced at least one incident of sexual harassment in their lifetime.
The report said this could reflect changes in the prevalence of sexual harassment, as well as changing attitudes that meant people were more able to recognise sexual harassment and more willing to disclose their experiences. It found one in three people working in federal parliament have experienced some form of sexual harassment there.Ms Higgins said on Twitter on Tuesday the ABS statistics were shocking.
“It shines a light on what’s at the heart of sexual harassment – and that’s an abuse of power,” Ms Foster said. She said young women, women with disabilities and those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities were particularly vulnerable.
