One lucky generation of Aussies is set to inherit a tonne of money in the coming years, and it’s not just the super rich who will benefit.

A new report has found Gen X and older Millennials can expect to inherit an eye watering $3.5 trillion in the coming years and the cash won’t be confined to the super wealthy, with even the poorest Australians expected to receive a windfall.Wealth transfers are getting bigger too with over $120 billion passed on in 2018, more than double that in 2002 and more than the federal government spent on health that financial year, found the Productivity Commission.

“Hence wealth transfers tend to reduce the share of wealth held by the richest Australians and our projections show this is likely to continue. This might be a surprise to some, but it’s been found in every other country that’s been studied.” “Inherited wealth is only a modest contributor to intergenerational wealth persistence. About one third of this observed persistence is due to inherited wealth. The rest comes from all the other things parents give to their children – education, networks, values and other opportunities,” Productivity Commissioner Lisa Gropp said.
