Shamima Begum: Islamic State supporter can return to UK, court rules

Ms Begum, now 20, was one of three London schoolgirls who left the UK to join the Islamic State in Syria in 2015.

The ruling means the UK government will be forced to find a way for her to appear in court in London, after previously saying it would not help remove her from Syria despite her pleas. “This is a very disappointing decision by the Court. We will now apply for permission to appeal this judgment, and to stay its effects pending any onward appeal. The Government’s top priority remains maintaining our national security and keeping the public safe,” it said.

Begum had previously claimed she was “just a housewife” when she spent four years living in the IS caliphate. She had married a young Dutch fighter called Yago Riedijk three weeks after arriving there, however she left Raqqa in January 2017 with her husband.Begum took legal action against the Home Office, arguing the decision to render her stateless was unlawful.
