Breaking: Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a free childcare program for Australian parents during the coronavirus shutdown.

With this additional support, he said it will boost assistance to the sector to $1.6 billion.

Mr Tehan said the only conditions for childcare centres to receive the payments were the centre must remain open and must provide care for those parents who need their children cared for.He also said the government would wave the gap fee for parents who have been paying for childcare, backdated to March 23.Credit:The childcare changes apply to businesses with under $1 billion in revenue.

Mr Tehan said childcare centres will prioritise children of essential workers who can't care for their children at home and vulnerable children, and then try to accommodate parents who have taken their children out of care.LoadingBut he said because many parents had voluntarily pulled their children out throughout the crisis, it had made some centres un-viable.

"Now, what we are doing here is ensuring that the same arrangements exist for childcare centres [as for schools] so people who have those jobs won't have their livelihoods put at risk," he said. "This virus is going to take enough from Australians without putting Australian parents in that position of having to choose between the economic wellbeing of their family or the care, support and education of their children."Get our Coronavirus Update newsletter for the day's crucial developments at a glance, the numbers you need to know and what our readers are saying. Childcare fee has made lots of daycares shout down straightaway bras CCS lost. All essential workers such as daycare teachers who are still working lost a conserable amount of income.

Keep going! We can turn things around

So sad that it took a pandemic for the conservatives to deve6a social conscious. Too late me thinks!

FFS don’t call it ‘free’.....devalues the service and people start thinking of ways to rort the system. It’s a government subsidised childcare program and probably not free because every single Australian will pay the price for years to come.

Such a socialist

Sweden has free childcare, if they can do it, so can we. Priorities Australia.

What about the health & safety of childcare workers ABSURD!

Didn't he ask the media not to use terms like 'shutdown'?

I guess front line workers just need care 7-6pm hospitals, fire fighters, police don’t work at night... right?

EUinAus Is it only for Australian parents or any parents?

What about people who have a job, who can work at home, still need childcare but might not send their children because of health and community transmission concerns? Do we have to keep paying full rate for spots we are not using?

Helping out a mate in a time of need PeterDutton_MP. I'm sure you 'Family trust' of child care centres will benefit from this announcement.

I hope there will also be assistance for front line childcare workers implementing social distancing measures with small children.

Great job Scomo, this will really help. So glad you're our leader through this. Now watch theprojecttv find fault as the always do then AlboMP claim it was his idea and the abcnews claim its a policy for the rich or some other anti-Australian strategy.

Wouldn't childcare be seen as a vector of infection in exactly the same way schools are?

Before or after the bushfire fund?

ihustwick

Thats the least he can do for the ppl that live and die on his drip fed orderly congo line to the hospitals..till we've all had dose or vac comes along.or the over 55's revolt
