It's hoped targeted therapies can be developed for sufferers of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and ADHD, following a genetic research breakthrough.

Researchers have identified exactly how more than 300 genes interact to cause serious mental illnesses, opening the door for more targeted therapies for sufferers.

Researchers have identified more than 300 genes which interact in specific ways to cause common mental illnesses.Head of QIMR’s Translational Neurogenomics Group, Professor Eske Derks, said the breakthrough allowed for a much clearer biological picture of the various disorders.“We use the information to get a better understanding of where genes are active and how that relates to mental health disorders,” Professor Derks said.

QIMR’s Professor Eske Derks, says the research will lead to more targeted treatment for sufferers of mental conditions. They also did extensive testing on where in the body the various genes were found, revealing 137 were found solely in brain tissue while 24 per cent of the genes were detected in the easily accessible blood tissue.

“We’ve known for a while now that mental illness is caused by both nature and nurture, but studies like this are helping us to understand the nature side of things,” Dr Blashki said. Mr Reid also welcomed the breakthrough, saying the current methods of treating mental health were inadequate.

Pretty sure most Aboriginal people recognise pork barrelling when they see it. Love the labor policies. Would’ve been nice to hear about indigenous affairs in any of the leaders debates.
