A northern beaches school has proposed the day start at 8.25am and end at 2pm, to allow for self-regulated learning sessions. But some parents worry the move won't suit all students | natassiazc

Even before the pandemic, schools such as Sir Joseph Banks High restructured timetables to allow senior students half days and Merrylands East Public School made its hours 8am to 1.15pm.Ms Ferris said the proposal, which is still in a consultation period, would help develop students' organisational and time-management skills, as well as qualities such as persistence, motivation and a sense of self-efficacy.

Other parents, including year 7 father Christopher Hunt, questioned the European model and whether junior school students were suited to self-directed learning. In a recorded Q&A session, the school's leadership said the maximum five minutes cut from classes meant teaching time was largely retained, while earlier starts were similar to those at nearby private schools which began before 8.30am.The school said teachers would explicitly guide students to develop self-regulation skills, such as setting goals, reflecting on work, and managing time through Google calendars, and tasks would be structured to support all learners.

Ms Ferris acknowledged some students had struggled with self-regulation during the remote learning period. But she said they would need to develop organisational skills and autonomy for success beyond school.ld also be tweaked to accommodate the 2pm finish time, she said.

natassiazc Nothing wrong with 8:30 til 5:00 6 days/week. Half a day off at Xmas.

natassiazc I've taught in three schools with 8:15pm, 8:18pm or 8:30pm start for a 2:30pm or 2:40pm finish during my career. I prefer it, but in a number of regional areas, early starts are not plausible due to buses (think students in remote areas or where there is one bus to/from town)
