Schools and families need a better plan to deal with rising cases of COVID-19

My teenager tested positive to COVID-19 last week. This meant our family had to enter its second week of isolation this term, a younger sibling having tested positive in week one of the school year., and schoolchildren making up a large chunk of these numbers, it is critical that the health experts and the NSW government create a plan that prevents and manages infection in schools so that sending children home or keeping them home is a measure of absolute last resort.

Our children are essential workers. They are the next generation of workers, thinkers, taxpayers and leaders. They cannot be indefinitely resilient.

The lifting of restrictions around masks and testing at schools, which coincided with two weeks of torrential rain that reduced classroom ventilation and increased mixing between students, has driven the increase in school cases. The biggest increase over the past weekReinfections are starting to occur, and schools are struggling

to fill shortages caused by staff catching COVID-19. Government teaching staff reported 2989 positive results between the start of term and March 1.

If the Morrison/Gladys/Perrettot NSW government had not 'let it rip', by lifting what little restrictions they had at the beginning of covid, and treated it with a more cautious approach, they would be in a far better position today, and would have prevented the deaths of 100s.
