reported that Caulfield Grammar had opted not to name its newly opened aquatic centre after Horton to preserve the school’s commercial interests in China. These include a campus in Nanjing and a large Chinese student body in Melbourne.
"The school has not started a process for naming the facility after any individual, or decided at this time if it will be named after any individual," Mr Martin said. "The naming of buildings at Caulfield Grammar School is a school council decision and discussions relating to the naming of the Caulfield Aquatic Centre have not commenced."
Although the name of the pool has not been formally considered by the school council, the school made no secret of its earlier intention to name the aquatic centre after its first Olympic gold medallist.Horton’s association with the school was used to elicit donations for the project, his father Andrew Horton was consulted on establishing a swimming program at the pool and Horton’s coach Craig Jackson held discussions with the school about shifting his high-performance squad to the pool.
Yang is a drug cheat. The pool should be named after Horton.
Greatest school on the planet. Typical garbage from
I simply despise private schools.
Go for it.
Having been used to help raise funds for the pool and other help given by Matt and his family in regards to the project, how could it NOT be named after him? The school's first gold medallist too!
Good news, why couldn't you name your pool after a talent raised in the same place just becoz China might upset? Shouldn't let CCP rule you
Sun Yang upset ! Believes pool should be named after him given embarrassment he felt when Mack Horten refused to stand alongside him after he cheated (oops, meant) finished first. No winners here !
Have some balls and call their bluff. Otherwise I question the example they are setting for their students.
its pathetic
Subsided private school spending $25 million. Our taxes folks.
This is completely incorrect reporting of the schools position. You should be ashamed about your journalism.
So it should! Has everyone forgotten this is our country and we should stop cowardly fawning to the minorities and cater for the majority! Mack Horton was a champion swimmer who stood against cheats. It’s a pity the Olympic Committee didn’t have the strength to do the same!
P.R stunt
Grow a pair Caulfield Grammar! Take a stance against despotism.
Shayna Jack stuffed it up for Horton.......news of her drug cheating just after the podium incident made Horton look like a dick. Unlucky time I guess.
What an absolutely thrilling dilemma that affects so very many of us in such a profound way. I’m on the edge of my seat.
LOL but didn’t they say they had no plan ... so how could they revive it ? Not a good look to mislead people after the recent fiasco at St Kevin’s
Why the hell would China care what some local secondary college names its pool? Srsly.
Ahhh~~here it is~~
Have some backbone Caulfield GS, don’t let the influence of the Chinese income stream interfere with what you stand for....integrity.
Why let trade with China affect naming of a pool in a school in Melbourne? What we’ve got to look at is Australia & its obsession with sport and not exercise. I think swimming is good exercise but AUSTRALIA needs to ramp up its critical thinking skills. Dopey PC robots abound.
I don't care what it's named, but why do schools that can spend $25 million on a pool get so much public funding?
They should consider opening it to the public.
So it should. It would be racist not to. We have to stop pandering to the Chinese. They won't be around forever. Karma will see to that.
Better than the Harold Holt pool in Malvern after all he drowned didn’t he 😎
Let’s not name any more of our sporting arenas after controversial people eh
