A Melbourne high school principal fears parents may view a government travel ban exemption for Chinese year 12 students as an economic decision, rather than in the best interests of student health.
Brighton Secondary College principal Richard Minack said schools would need to be vigilant against any discrimination aimed at returning Chinese students.Brighton Secondary College, a state school in Melbourne's southeast, hosts 40 to 45 Chinese students each year, with about 14 currently stuck in China.
"The risk is if it looks like an economic decision, rather than a health decision. That’s where the messaging to the school community can be tricky. Parents can say, 'there are year 11 or 12 students, why not others? Is there a residual risk to other students?'"
Self quarantine is the issue
An economic decision made by this government, surely not!!
A school campus? What a perfect place for viral illnesses to spread. Dual passports? Been in China for Lunar New Year? Screen each student for their travel history and health profile. Bowing to the higher education sector which is now $ driven.
Experts and officials always making stupid decisions. Common sense belongs to ordinary people.
China will not reopen their school they all got online classes. Why take risks for our children our generation in this visible danger?
what is meaning a school stand for? Money or education?
Not could, but IS an economic decision. 7NewsAustralia
Australia. Where the economy is more important than environmental and human rights.
I feel like there’s a few zeros missing from the figure
What about Korean student now? What about Korean & Italian now? Iran? Will Australia block them all just like China?
Time to seek legal advice to view compensation against administration heading these universities who have lax safety responsibilities regarding health and safety of their students, time to hear from the student union or climate change taking up their time?
China haven’t reopened their schools yet.
Good to see once again the Government putting the economic interests of the few, over the general well-being of all coronavirus coronavirusaustralia. We're going to be like Italy in a few weeks 🙄
Surely these students should serve a 2 week quarantine period before allowing them to integrate with students and the community.
Phil_B7 Absolutely it’s an economic decision. There’s no thought at all for the safety of Australian citizens. It’s not just student health ffs. I’ve not heard anything about said Overseas students being quarantined upon arrival either. Universities are big earners so lots of clout.
Money money money. So we lose a couple of white students? We'll just get some more cashed up Chinese ones to replace them.
How can it be anything but an economice desicion. Each student pays the goverment more than 30k to be at a school
No one gives a rats toss bag at Crown Casino.......Paranoid with too many Victorian's hiding under their racist beds.
Surely there needs to be conformity across the board without money being a determining factor. You would be pretty pissed if you caught Coronavirus due to lax policy.
No shit?
Money talks China tell politicians what to do because some of these pricks owe them
It can”t possibly be in the interests os student health.
