Joel McIlroy was once one of the most beloved characters on Home And Away. But years later, he finds himself behind bars charged with assault.

Images of the clean-shaven, smiling star were once beamed into loungerooms around the country and he was nominated for a silver Logie for his starring role onrole as the husband of Sally Fletcher, played by the show’s then-golden girl Kate Ritchie.

For McIlroy, according to his lawyer, one of the symptoms the actor has been most-affected by is poor impulse control. A bystander intervened but not before McIlroy allegedly punched one of the officer’s in the face seven times, even attempting to put her in a chokehold at one point, the court was told.

The 46-year-old was nominated for an Australian Film Award in 1995 for his role in a short film namedand later enrolled in a director’s course at the National Institute of Dramatic Art . The magistrate said that McIlroy’s alleged intervention in the original arrest, and his allegedly violent behaviour following it, left him with no other choice but to keep the actor behind bars.

As the police prosecutor ran through their facts on the alleged offence, McIlroy let out a dry laugh when the prosecutor told the court the alleged assault “involved several punches on the face to the officer”.The prosecutor continued, “he also attempted to put an arm around her neck” before McIlroy cut in again.“Mr McIlroy I’ve asked you to be quiet,” Magistrate Williams said, as the police prosecutor tried to continue.

New laws to help home owners sue dodgy builders in NSWIn the wake of the construction disasters of the Opal Tower and Mascot Towers, the NSW Government is introducing new laws to Parliament which would mean builders have a duty of care to owners and could be fined upwards of $100,000 for any faulty work. Just about 20 years too late Should also incorporate provisions to sue shonky governments & political parties that preside over 'dodgy' regulatory regimes!! This is nothing but passing the parcel.
