Strain,H5N1,Avian Influenza

Victoria’s Department of Health issued an alert on Wednesday after a returned overseas traveller tested positive for bird flu.

A human case of the avian influenza, also known as bird flu , has been reported in Victoria and it's the first time this particular strain of the virus has been detected in a person or animal in the country.

It is usually spread by contact with an infected bird, handling its droppings or bedding or preparing infected poultry for cooking. There is no evidence of transmission in Victoria and the chance of additional human cases is very low as avian influenza does not easily spread between people.“Transmission to humans is very rare, with a small number of human cases of H5N1 reported globally, resulting in death in a number of cases,” it's update said. This is incident is reportedly not connected to an outbreak of avian influenza among birds at a poultry farm in regional Victoria.
