Ian blasted ashore at the barrier island of Cayo Costa on Wednesday afternoon as a category four hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 241 kilometres per hour. There were two unconfirmed storm-related fatalities, Mr DeSantis said, though the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported one death — a 72-year-old man in Deltona who fell into a canal while using a hose to drain his pool in the heavy rain.

"A lot of down trees, a lot of flooding everywhere. We are trying to get a hold of my daughter," said Terri Byrd as she sat in a vehicle in a supermarket parking lot trying to get mobile phone service, after spending the night at an elementary school in Venice.
