A father and his son are lucky to be alive after their yacht crashed into a reef late Thursday night in Western Australia. 9News

His voice was calm despite the fraught situation as the skipper made a mayday call, desperate to get his 11-year-old son to safety.

"We are in the water and we are being crushed by broken furniture," the father can be heard saying in a recording of the radio call for help.A father and his son are lucky to be alive after their yacht crashed into a reef late Thursday night in Western Australia. Their stricken 42-foot yacht was taking on water and pummelled by waves after it became stuck on a reef at Transit Rocks, near Thomson Bay just off Rottnest Island, at 8.30pm.Water Police scrambled to the spot first, telling the duo "don't abandon ship at the moment, we are coming to your location".Conditions were initially too dangerous for rescue crews. But 15 minutes later, the winds and their fate changed.

The yacht struck a reef at Transit Rocks, near Thomson Bay just off Rottnest Island near Perth and started taking on water. Emergency management specialist support division Inspector Steve Scott said the duo were lucky to be alive.Once rescued, the pair were assessed by paramedics. They suffered minor injuries, including a broken arm and some rib injuries.
