A preliminary report into the fatal train derailment in Victoria earlier this year has been released, suggesting the train was exceeding speed limits at the time of the crash.

The report confirmed the train, which was travelling from Sydney to Melbourne, entered a passing loop at Wallan at a speed of more than 100 km/h - when the speed limit for that section of track was 15 km/h.

Data from the train's travel logger shows an emergency brake application was applied a short distance before entering the passing loop. The driver and another worker were killed in the crash. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will continue investigating the incident.

Driver was doing normal speed, but was NOT told the line was set for the loop. Somebody at ARTC is going to get big kick in arse

Probably a no brainer really 🤷‍♂️

What a load BS. Stop funding the corrupt U.N. and WHO and start building our trains, bridges and highways

Don’t expect the driver to lose his job.

Really next

Govt stimulus package prioritised ‘speed over detail’ | Sky News AustraliaSky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says there is a “method behind the madness” of the government's stimulus package which will support businesses and provide welfare payments during the coronavirus crisis. \n\nMr Clennell said the government’s decision to financially prop up childcare centres was motivated by a desire to ensure “all manner of critical workers” and particularly those working in the health industry could continue to do so. \n\n“The concern was that many childcare centres would go bust and then you would have workers unable to access childcare which would lead to more job losses than we have already seen,” he said. \n\nHe added the decision to keep “the wage subsidy at a flat rate so that people earning less than $750 a week start getting $750 a week” was driven by the need to “roll it out quickly”. \n\n“If they tinkered with means testing it would become quite complicated to administer and they have a lot of things to administer at the moment”. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia UK banks agree to scrap £8bn dividends amid recession fears note: stay home SocialistScotty

Australia cannot 'lose its heart' during COVID-19 panic | Sky News AustraliaThe coronavirus panic throughout Australia is 'making some people a bit callous,' so the federal and state governments must 'start loosening some of these restrictions before people break,' says Sky News host Andrew Bolt. \n\nMr Bolt said there was 'cautious reason for hope' as Australia's coronavirus rate of spread was 'the lowest in the 24 hours to 3pm [Wednesday] since this crisis began'.\n\nThis means 'we can at least be certain we're not going to see anything like 150,000 deaths, as many media outlets warned,' he said.\n\nAustralia's deaths from the virus suggest 'two important things,' one being that the 'vast majority of younger Australians are highly unlikely to die from this virus,' and also we now know 'exactly which group is most at risk,' and can focus on protecting them.\n\nMr Bolt said although the strict measures on public gatherings and social distancing do not need to be lifted right now, it is important to loosen them when the curve begins to significantly flatten.\n\nThere are growing signs 'that this fear and this fierce response is making us lose all sense of proportion, making us coarser, less generous'.\n\n'We may have lost our senses in this panic, [but] have we really also lost our heart'.\n\nImage: AP Andrew Bolt can go fuck himself Hey Bolt. Go visit an ICU and tell us more of your views. With Andrew Bolt's history of defending child molesters I'm not surprised he's in favour of loosening restrictions. Fkn creep!

Australia should 'take an equity stake' in foreign owned airline | Sky News AustraliaGiven Virgin Australia is '90 per cent China owned' and 'paid no tax' on $23.4 billion revenue for five years, the Australian government need to 'take a share in the company' rather than giving it a bailout says Centre Alliance Senator Rex Patrick.\n\nThe airline, which recently stood down 8,000 employees, has lobbied the government for a $1.4 billion rescue package.\n\nSenator Patrick said Australia does need to 'protect our aviation industry' and ensure there are 'two players in the market,' but the answer is not a federal loan, rather the government needs to 'take an equity stake' in the airline.\n\nHe told Sky News host Peta Credlin given Virgin 'has paid no tax over the five years [between 2013\u002F14 and 2017\u002F18] on $23.4 billion worth of revenue' if the government did 'hand that company money … most taxpayers would find that offensive'.\n\nHis idea would see a situation where 'we help the company out after the coronavirus,' end up with the aviation sector returning to normal, and 'the taxpayer could actually make a profit'.\n\nImage: AP Senator_Patrick Why bail out on overseas owned company ... how unaustrailian is that !!!!
