Sydney president Andrew Pridham has cast doubt on the economics of a standalone team in Tasmania saying relocation of an existing one must remain as an option as the August decision draws near.

North Melbourne, who play four games a season in Hobart, are the club most often linked with relocating, but they have also continually ruled out agreeing to such a move. The Kangaroos are also debt free and receive less AFL funding than other clubs, particularly Gold Coast and the Giants who joined the competition this century.

The Tasmanian Government pays for Hawthorn and the Kangaroos to play home games in Launceston and Hobart. The AFL committed to a vote from presidents in August, however, the retirement of Tasmanian premier Peter Gutwein, uncertainty about the real cost of a new stadium in Hobart and the AFL’s unwillingness to guarantee more than $8 million per year in funding,to the team over 10 years, has stifled the bid’s momentum.

petryan Yes Essendon & Footscray should merge & move there

petryan Tassie would perform well with their own team......Its a myth.

petryan The irony, after the Swans were propped up for decades.

petryan Kudos to Geelong for supporting Tassie’s bid for their own team. And if you reduce existing list size by just 3 players there is sufficient talent to cope with a 19th team.

petryan It won't wash, Tassie would be fine, they would get 25k full stadium at home, no marvel costs, this story the AFL is trying also won't wash, all they will do is alienate a state from AFL, nbl is smashing them down there

petryan Also that footy tribunal decision is more serious then a domestic violence court case

petryan Curiosity question - what are the teams most Tasmanians support now?

petryan So not really going to support a Tasmanian team either, maybe as second team, because as you said unlike Sydney Tasmania is filled with people that already one eyed have a team. I’m from Tasmania and everyone says that might as second team but wouldn’t change teams.

petryan Relocating an existing club worked in Sydney because there weren't people there already supporting teams. People in Tasmania won't support a relocated team unless it was the one they already supported.

petryan Sydney putting their hand up to relocate?

petryan Great to see the Swans willing to relocate again for the sake of the competition.

petryan By all means, keep it on life support but Tasmanians will never support it. It will fail should it go ahead. 98 and ¾ percent guaranteed!

petryan relocation only viable option. dont need 19 teams, talent pool too small

Food delivery cyclist injuries going under-reported, Sydney study findsDelivery riders 13 times more likely than recreational cyclists to present to emergency department between 8pm and midnight Let me guess, because they’re contractors they’re not covered by WorkCover ? vesna2001 It is a damn shame what New South Wales Liberal party did to the planned Sydney cycleways that Bob Carr had famously previously dropped the ball on. I also see appalling road habits and manners from both cyclists and scooter riders in this occupation.
