Regional Victorians have expressed frustration at being placed into stage four lockdown despite having no known COVID-19 cases.

The Australian Open isn’t the only tennis getting knocked around by Victoria’s latest COVID-19 lockdown: in fact, compared to those readying for the 2021 country week tournament, the professionals at outbreak epicentre in Melbourne are getting away lightly.

“We agree with a lockdown to get on top of it, but the issue is there are no cases in country Victoria, so why are they using such a blunt instrument to cure a problem in Melbourne?” said tournament convenor John Brookshaw.Victorian leader of the Nationals Peter Walsh, whose electorate of Murray Plains takes in Swan Hill, said his office had been fielding calls since Friday afternoon from residents wondering the same thing.

Independent state Member for Mildura Ali Cupper said the blanket restrictions would be difficult for regional people to accept. Mildura MP Ali Cupper said the Andrews government needed to outline a more nuanced city vs country approach to COVID-19 restrictions by Wednesday. While it was guaranteed to be “pretty tough few days”, Mr Cupper said the Andrews Government needed to evaluate the outbreak’s spread and outline a more nuanced city-country approach by Wednesday.

Premier Daniel Andrews said on Saturday it was not possible to roll out a comprehensive ring of steel in short time.

There are some close contacts in Ballarat being investigated now. Victoria is small and people travel to the regions. I have spoken to regional Vic people and they are fine with lockdown. It's easy to find the few loud voices who want to discredit the state govt. Try harder.

No, calm the farm - I'm rural and don't have a problem with it. Am sick of the GetDan campaign too btw

I just spent a week in St Arnaud via Sunbury. I had no idea about Sunbury hotspots until I got home Saturday. If I had been a carrier the whole of St Arnaud and that Shire would be infected. Forget your politics and think of the science.

senbmckenzie Jobs for the boy? When does nepotism become corruption? He doesnt seem to meet the selection criteria for the job, but mummy fixed that. What was his job payment for?

The Age again with a lot of crap ...... sinking low again ..... the Age was a great Independent paper once... now crap on crap on crap more Opinion pieces than news ..... sad paper ..... down hill all the way.

I'm fine with it. You didn't speak to me.

...welcome to your future. This is what the left want.

Most regional cities support the LNP even though they have closed down their farms and supported big overseas corporations growing cotton almonds and rice 🤷‍♀️

Let’s keep it that way, 0 for the regional areas is great. Why would we do a major set up for a 5 day lock down. Seriously 😒

Sunbury had exposure sites. We’ve also had traces found in waste water at Gisbourne. Regional Victoria was already at risk despite the lack of cases.

Yes but the majority of us out here are cool with it. It’s a pain in the arse but we do what we need to.

Lies from The Age nothing new

I live far over on the other side of Melbourne to where the affected suburbs are. There are “regional “ areas much closer to the affected suburbs so why am I seen as the risk to the regional areas?

Vote labor out.

Agree.

senbmckenzie

So you spoke to Regional Victoria personally to confirm this claim? How is Regi? Send him my regards- post to LNP and your boss Peter Costello. I think they all have the same time- share together in your editorial office.

Congratulations AGE Keep dividing people regional vs Cities states vs states. The AGE spreads hatred like D TRUMP 🇺🇸.

The ring of steel last time was a logistical nightmare and cost thousands of dollars and man hours(police) to implement and didn’t work.

Those regional Victorians would have had a number of suburbanites fleeing to holiday homes in their area and perhaps bringing an unwelcome guest with them.

Given a domestic terminal is one of the exposure sites, state wide lock down seems a sensible action.

senbmckenzie While other Australians are frustrated that despite giving taxpayer money to your own club, you still have a job. Your indignation at the Senate hearing was laughable and your behaviour would be criminal in the public sector senbmckenzie nothingHonourableHereBridget

There were good arguments put up for that but I haven’t got the energy to help The Age anymore. ( I’m in rural Victoria by the way and I’m fine with it and expect it to happen again until we get that fucking vaccine) up at work actually getting ready for next week

tyrelle123 SIMPLE MESSAGE OPEN YOUR HOMES OPEN YOUR BUSINESS GO ABOUT YOUR DAILY ROUTINE SING & DANCE IN THE STREETS LET EVERYONE KNOW YOUR FREE DON'T WAIT FOR OTHERS EVERYBODY LEAD THE WAY

Regional Victorian are just getting on with it as they have all along. Wearing masks, locking down when asked. No big deal. Yet you rush around finding the few complainants. Beyond useless TheAge

Nope canceltheage

And by the way we can spot city folk a mile away! No smiles, no giving space for others, just full of their own importance! Sorry not all but a hell of a lot of you!

No cases in my town either. Plenty of Melbourne caravaners came pouring in before midnight on Friday though. More than happy to lockdown, and there’s a few more people in our supermarkets than there should be.

If country vic don’t lock down we get city folk turning up which in turn risk us! Plus there is probs a few travellers that are country folk anyway.

Look. There's no cases where I live too. But it is what it is and it's only 5 days.

Because people cannot be trusted to comply with travel restrictions.

It’s on the organisers- is it the time to be organising larger scale events? 🤔 they decided to take the risk going ahead...

Interview a few random businesses. Extrapolate. Story

dannolan None of the one's on twitter have. Gay_Alcorn I see the Age is continuing its sweeping statements based on a small minority. FactsMatter ForthEstateFailure

Age regional demographic - portsea and rye

The Victorian government should never have been trusted with hotel quarantine.

Once again a bullshit story from The Age. Look at who was interviewed. Guaranteed to be unhappy. No mention of why regions included. In reality, I think a lot of regional people will be happy that people from Melbourne will not be travelling down to infect them.

with Costello’s Gay_Alcorn as editor seems that the pressure & concerted effort “to produce particular angles” has intensified with LNP lickspittle Zhope10 only too willing to do his bit & undermine precautionary health measures in support of the LNP. auspol

Stop posting bullshit

I'm from regional vic and many of us hate that we are in lockdown but understand why we are in it. Lockdowns, amongst other strategies, are what has kept regional vic safe.

As a regional Victorian, I would really like to keep it at no known cases, thanks. I find the media spin way more frustrating. Trying to set us up against Melburnians, & stoke anger for the govt. It's a couple of days. Some country folk like to complain. But we'll be fine! 🤷🏼‍♀️

No we haven’t. Just shut up. We understand why it’s necesssry

Are country Victorians really happy for covid to spread from the city into the bush?

It’s crap totally agree

Stop bringing infected people into largely populated areas. Send them to mining camps

Your headline needs a qualifier - either 'Some' or 'Not all' regional Victorians -----

As a regional Victorian, i can assure you that many regional Victorians will be expressing their anger about some shiz at every opportunity that presents itself.

The airport was the highest risk exposure site. Regional Victorians fly too!

You’d have to fairly dim not to understand the rationale behind this. It’s for our own protection.

I'm in regional, and I'm not. Last lockdown we had people taking back roads to try and play at our local golf course. I don't trust ppl.

Please stop these nonsense headlines again and is 5 days and clearly to stop risk of spread

A lockdown because of Brunettis exposure site. All close contacts cleared so lockdown should end now. Not required. Overreaction panic over the 5 cases announced Friday morning. Bet your bottom dollar there will be zero cases announced Sunday AM, Monday & Tuesday!

Really? I’m in regional Vic and don’t feel this way. More frustrated with the media than anything else.

It’s hard to feel sorry for people in a State where a majority vote Labor.

Only because Melbourne people like to escape to their regional properties when lockdowns happen Always better to be safe than sorry

Bull crap! I’m in regional Victoria, “Teams & families from mostly regional Victoria” means some were coming from Melbourne. If only one of them had COVID, that’s game over for the region. A short, sharp lockdown, play your game next week, or the week after. Just get on with it.

Because the government screwed up hotel quarantine and killed 800 people, they now over-react.

We, Australian Natives, did the same with foreign British travellers centuries years ago. But they did not listen and we were devastated by foreign British smallpox!
